Reacting to the Government’s ‘Earned settlement’ proposals

Reacting to the Home Secretary’s statement on ‘earned settlement’, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Siân Berry said:

“The Home Secretary has not listened to her cabinet colleagues, or the majority of the welcoming and compassionate British public who hugely appreciate what migrants and refugees bring to this country. She is instead carrying on the cruel legacy of the Starmer government, which will leave hard-working people in a potentially decades-long state of precarity and worry.

“For migrants already here, today’s new obstacle course of hoops and barriers, threatening them not to make use of social security, is a mess born out of the rightful backlash to the original plans that would have ripped away routes to settlement from people who have been putting down roots for years.

“And measures to literally punish asylum seekers if they reach us by desperate means such as small boats, is a very grim reincarnation of the Conservative ‘Hostile Environment’, and something else all Greens and many Labour MPs will find hard to stomach.”
