Reacting to the latest CCC advice on Heathrow airport expansion

In new advice to the Government, the Climate Change Committee has stated: ‘there is no credible pathway for Heathrow Airport expansion within the UK’s climate commitments under current policies.’

Responding to this advice, Green MP Sian Berry said:

“The Climate Change Committee could not be clearer today that no amount of fudge can make airport expansion compatible with our climate commitments. It is disgraceful to see this Labour government twist its own promises into knots simply to try to make bigger profits for the bosses of one private company, Heathrow Airport, and in spite of the ever-growing costs of climate breakdown.

“Expansion at Heathrow would come at the expense of every part of the country and every other mode of transport. The Government must now listen to its own advisors, abandon its reckless plans to push through the huge mistake of allowing a third Heathrow runway, and instead invest its efforts in the public transport services people actually use every day.”
